vision, and now a high end manufacturer. Gotta love it!!
Onward, in my quest for unique and high quality aftermarket accessories for
Adventure Touring bikes, I wanted to find a US based manufacture of exhaust
systems that was US Forestry approved for off road use. It didn't take much longer then
browsing through the May 2007 Quad magazine to find HMF as the Readers' Choice
for Favorite Exhaust. Very cool...
A quick search on the web and a call to the company started the wheels rolling.
We discussed mufflers and the KTM 950 and they informed me that they had built a
set for the bike but haven't sold any. Call me a guinea pig so I ponied up the
$$ and had a set on the way in no time.
I
had ordered the brushed aluminum finish but could've opted for the black or
orange powder coat. The mufflers are all aluminum which greatly reduces the back
end heat issue of the 995/990 and also shreds some serious weight from the
bikes. The picture to the left shows the mufflers installed with OPTIONAL
black "Vortex" end caps. Very cool, yes?!
The mufflers arrived lickety split to secret testing grounds in Springfield, NJ
where as I tore the box open and dove right into getting the puppies mounted. To
my surprise, the install was not your normal remove the old mufflers and install
the new one, but rather this kit came with new link pipes that eliminated the
OEM link pipe with the crossover. Interesting....but neat.
The
time to install the mufflers was about an hour but the majority of that time was
in try to figure out how to remove the stock link pipe with cross over tube.
After a while I just kept removing parts until I had room. Essentially, all I
had to do was to remove the forward link pipe mounts and the OEM link pipe had
plenty of room to come back. That was easy!!
NOTE: Install the mufflers onto the new link pipes first!!
So I started with the left side, loosely fitting everything, then calmly moved
onto the right side again loosely fitting everything. Looks great so lets
tighten everything down. That worked fine until I took a second look from the
rear and saw the left side lower then the right. That's not good!! I'm too
concerned with symetry ;) An easy fix by just loosening up the link pipe and
giving it a nudge. Perfect!!
(mufflers shown below with brushed exhaust tips that come standard)

Time to crank her up and see what the beast
sounds like. Whoa!! What a bark!! These mufflers are not for the faint of heart
but I forgot I run them without the Quite Core (optional) ;) which
greatly reduces the exhaust note for those of
